Costs and price quotes
The cost of an index may range from $4 to $8 per indexable page. This is influenced by the density of the information on the page and the complexity of the material.
I typically charge a fixed price for indexing projects based on these rates.
I can give you a quote to produce your index before your page proofs are ready. To obtain a quote, I will need the following information:
- A general description of the book or an abstract and a few sample chapters
- Specifications for the index, such as publisher style guide, length limit, and any special requirements
- The estimated number of indexable pages based on the page proofs
- The date when the page proofs will be available for indexing
- The deadline for the index
Once we have discussed your project and I have looked over the sample chapter, I will give you a quote. Once we have agreement, I will send you a confirmation.
Accommodating changes
Before I begin indexing, it is important that I have the pdf of the final page proofs. Otherwise rework may be necessary, incurring additional costs.
Because I use professional software, I can handle minor revisions easily, but substantial changes may require extra charges. In any case, I will work with you until you are satisfied with the index.
If the publishing schedule changes, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can reschedule your project.
Review of the index
Once my work is completed, I will send you the index in a Word doc or RTF file as you prefer. Take the time to go through the entries and please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
If the index is too large for the number of pages allowed, let me know. I have ways to cut down indexes without compromising its accuracy and consistency.
The same goes if the index needs any changes or corrections. Sometimes one change can trigger many others. .
Once the index has been dropped into the final page proofs, I would appreciate the opportunity to review the final index pages to confirm that it has been loaded correctly.
